3D Evaluation

3D Examples:

3. apple sculpture

I first started by collecting a wide range of interesting 3d art and images that I was attracted to varying from package designs to sculptures from 3d cakes to nail art and pop up business cards and posters.

I then did some research into each one, finding out who it was made from, why it was made, when and what materials were used. After this I then tried to explain what I saw and thought of each one. I was trying my best to analyse rather than describe the examples but was finding it difficult on some.

3D Presentation

From my collection we had to choose a piece to go more in depth with and present this in class, I decided to go with a sculpture made by Sayaka Ganz, I was intrigued by her belief and the story behind why she used recycled materials.

When I presented my work in class it seemed I had described and maybe talked about the story behind it too much and not analysed it enough. After receiving my feedback, I have since amended my presentation and included things like how it works, the style used and why she chose the colours she did. I also thought about visual irony and how it was made to look in motion. I then compared it with more recycled artwork by other artists.

Brand extension ideas and sketches

I started with jotting down ideas and options for extending brands, some more extreme than others. After this I chose 3 to work on and extend with sketches. I picked Billabong virtual headset, this head set would have had lots of sports installed like surfing, skiing, sky diving and abseiling etc. My second idea was for the Kellogg’s extended breakfast and morning routine accessories such as bread, eggs, milk, toothpaste and alarm clock. My final idea was the pub snacks by the company Strongbow which would include crisps, peanuts and pop scratchings etc.

I really liked the Kellogg’s idea but decided that a fried breakfast would be a bit extreme and wouldn’t really fit with the whole concept and further research showed me the alarm clock had already been produced.

I think my best option was the Strongbow pub snacks which I decided to run with as packaging design is something that I have a lot of interest in. I researched their brand including their logos like the golden apple, arrow target and the colours they use etc then started sketching some ideas out for packets.

Brand extension

After sketching some ideas, I thought a pack of peanuts would be a great choice. So, I designed the artwork for my packaging in illustrator thinking about the colours the company use for their alcohol products. I looked at their adverts, posters and images that they had produced throughout the years to help me.

Once I chose my colours and designed the images, I then started looking at other brands of peanuts to help me with positioning my images etc.

After I finished my design, I imported the art boards as material into cinema 4d to create my packaging which I quickly found out I had not set my design out correctly in illustrator which led to my packaging being flawed. I had set it out as though I was creating a poster and had not left enough space around my images. I went back and redesigned, moved things around and assured there was enough space. (Lesson learned when designing artwork for 3d shapes and packaging).

I am really pleased with how my final render turned out, this module has been the most enjoyable and the greatest challenge for me this semester. Cinema 4D is quite a complex app to use but by far the most rewarding when a design is finally complete

I have always been interested in package design etc and this has helped show me what can be achieved. There is still tons of the program that’s completely alien to me and I will need to continue practicing familiarising myself with the difficult effects and stuff.
